general.

Incorporated in 1986, the city brought together the communities of New Encinitas, Old Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain and Leucadia to create a single city rich in history and steeped in tradition. Encinitas got its name from Encina Canada, Spanish for “hills of live oaks” after Gaspar de Portola saw these live oaks in 1669, when he led an expedition through the region. Surfer Magazine has repeatedly named Encinitas one of the Top 10 surf neighborhoods in the United States.
